We named Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory as a recipient of the Sony Create Action Grant to support their mission advocating for diversity in the creative arts, media and tech industries. As recipients of the Create Action Grant, Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory receives $50,000 in cash to continue and expand the organization's work, $50,000 in Sony Electronics products to support their action plan, and this Sony-produced short film telling their story.
Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory provides comprehensive workforce development initiatives across the media arts for incarcerated youth. “I think we have worked really hard at earning the trust in the community. Of showing up for the community and of being able to be a space that’s not just physical,” says Carmelita Ramirez-Sanchez, executive director of Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory.
The organization has different iterations of workforce development, including the Mural Workforce Academy (MWA), open to high-school aged and above to provide them a stepping stone if they want to be an artist or muralist. Another program they offer unlike any other is the Bridge Academy Movement (BAM). This program employs young men while they are inside juvenile detention centers and continues to employ them once they are out.
