Through Smoke & Thunder...How The Alpha Collective Captured Canada's Rockies

In August, 10 members of Sony’s Alpha Imaging Collective ventured into the Canadian Rockies. The crew hiked the trails of Johnston Canyon, explored the forested vantage points surrounding the glacial lakes of Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Peyto Lake, and even had the rare opportunity to photograph wolves in the woods. The Collective also captured the towering peaks of The Three Sisters and Mt. Rundle from sunrise perches and braved the Canadian chill to craft some ethereal portraits. This is merely a first look at some of the sensational images they shot on the trip. See more images from the experience on Instagram at #AICdoesCanada.

"I shot all my photos on the α7R III this trip. I used the 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master for the majority of the shots and the 70-200mm for the remaining. Whether it was shooting low light early morning sunrises or action shots of wolves running, this camera performed exceptionally well under any conditions. It's lightweight, has a 42.4MP sensor, five-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS), dual memory card slots, and the long lasting Z battery." -Scott Wesson @thetravelvibe

"I always enjoy taking these trips with other creatives. We're all so different when it comes to our own personal style and I really enjoyed working alongside other photographers to see how they create their photos. It's always a great way to learn new things about how each of us work." Ashley Brehm @ashleyinwanderland

"My favorite gear combo was the α7R III and the Sony 12-24mm f/4 lens. The 12-24mm made it really easy to fit the entire landscape in one photo without distorting the image. I was still able to adjust to different locations because of the versatility of the zoom. I loved having the α7R III on the trip. I was able to have the confidence of 42 megapixels and having two card slots for all the shots that I took. The Z battery was amazing because I only changed my battery once for all 11 days I was in Canada." -Vincent Lim @vincelimphoto

"I’ll never forget running around with the grey wolves. They are such majestic creatures and being that close to one is a once-in-a-lifetime experience." -Philip Nguyen @philngyn

"The camera/lens combination that shined for me was the Sony α7 III and 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master. I used it for almost every timelapse I took, and it allowed me to set it and forget it while I shot with my other body and other lenses." -Phil Yoon @phil.yoon

"The α7R III was an amazing camera to use on this trip when combined with the 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master lens. I loved how I was able use it for everything from expansive landscape shots to astrophotography by Emerald lake. The large aperture of the lens allowed me to have a great foreground bokeh of flowers with Canadian lakes in the background." -Jason Frankle @worldpins
