8 Different Pickup Patterns, 4 Channels Of Audio
So, what makes the new Sony ECM-M1 so magic? Quiles explains, “The ECM-M1 is the world’s first eight-dial selectable audio recording mic. It has four capsules that allow you to pick up audio in a variety of different directions, as well as capturing stereo sound. As you can see on the back of the mic, you can use the dial to pick from one of eight different pickup patterns and then lock it in using the dial lock button.”
The eight pickup patterns include Super-Directional, Omni-Directional, Super-Directional Rear, Super-Directional Front & Rear, Super-Directional (Front + Rear) Separate, Stereo, Ultra-Directional. “You can capture audio in front of the camera using any of the three options on the dial,” Quiles explains. “Depending on how many people are in front of the camera, you can widen the pickup pattern so that that one microphone can pick up the audio from one or more people just by adjusting that dial. You can also capture 360-degree audio and even capture audio from behind the camera AND in front of the camera at the same time. Lastly, you can capture audio and stereo, all on the same compact microphone.”
Another game-changing feature on the microphone is the ability to capture four channels of audio so you can have backup safety recordings. For example, if you’re using the Super-Directional pickup pattern, it will be captured on Channel 1 and Channel 2. But Channel 3 will record Omni-Directional audio from all directions and Channel 4 does the same, but at -20 DB. “These safety recordings are there just in case you need them, but how cool is that?”
