AP Photographer Sakchai Lalit covered the recent heat wave in Thailand. With various ways to capture the intensity of the heat, Lalit wanted a unique view from above. This highly graphic image, reducing extraneous detail and visual clutter, encompasses the essence of the story within a simple composition.
Lalit explains, “When I got this assignment, I decided to go to Erawan Shrine - one of the most popular attractions for tourists. As I expected, a lot of people tried to get the space under the sun shade umbrella when they worshipped. But I would like to have something symbolize the heat with a top view angle in my photo. So, I walked up to the skywalk and waited for people to cross the road.

"I took this photo and got the elements I was looking for - the umbrella, the lighting, and the shadow. I also like the colors. The red color on the road while black and white contrast.”
