AP Photo Of The Week: Capturing Grace In Motion

AP photographer Michael Conroy snapped this shot of Gretchen Walsh competing in the Women’s 100 butterfly semifinals heat on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the US Swimming Trials in Indianapolis for the upcoming summer games. With his Sony Alpha 1 and a fast super-telephoto, the Sony 400mm f/2.8 G Master, he was able to capture this specific moment during the swimmer's stroke.

“This was the first event of the meet, the Women’s 100-meter butterfly. I’d noticed in the earlier heats that some of the swimmers finished their stroke with their hands out of the water and not covered by the splashing water. I tried to capture just the hands of the swimmer that competed in the event and got a bit lucky with a pretty good reflection in the water.“
