The Associated Press and PBS' Frontline won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Picture on Sunday night for "20 Days in Mariupol". The joint production is a documentary film, which was shot on Sony, that follows the journey of AP news journalists who were trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol in 2022. As the only international journalism team on the ground, they survived intensely challenging conditions in order to document the defining moments in history and to share crucial the messages with the outside world.
This was the first nomination and win for the AP, and the third nomination and first win for Frontline. AP Video Journalist and Ukrainian filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov said upon accepting the award, “This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, and I’m honored. Probably I will be the first director on this stage to say I wish I’d never made this film, I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine.”
