In the video Nicklen recounts a remarkable encounter with a mother whale and her calf, describing the overwhelming sensation of being in the water with these gentle giants. "I'd say by far the best encounter that we've had this expedition was a mother and her calf," he says. As he swims closer, the sheer size and grace of the 50-foot-long, 80,000-pound behemoth become apparent. The tender relationship between the mother and her calf unfolds as they navigate the ocean, offering Nicklen a front-row seat to their world.
Capturing Majestic Humpback Whales With Sony Alpha
With his Sony Alpha camera in hand, Nicklen captures the elegance of the whales, overcoming the challenges of underwater photography. The encounter allows him to get within 15 feet of the whales, witnessing their massive presence and gentle nature. The mother whale, with her long pectoral fins, communicates boundaries with subtle gestures, ensuring a respectful distance is maintained. "She was so gentle. So sweet. So accommodating. She let us into her world," he recalls.
A Dance Of Trust & Tranquility
Throughout the interaction, the whales exhibit a profound sense of peace and trust, allowing Nicklen to be part of their intimate circle. The experience is both humbling and exhilarating, revealing the deep connection between the mother and calf. Nicklen highlights the sensitivity and tenderness shared by the pair, a testament to the wisdom and calm inherent in these majestic creatures.
