We named Lil’ Filmmakers Inc. as a recipient of the Create Action Grant to support their mission to train young artists to use media and the arts as tools to overcome societal and personal barriers and prepare them for career opportunities in the creative industry. As recipients of the Create Action Grant, Lil’ Filmmakers receives $50,000 in cash to continue and expand the organization's work, $50,000 in Sony Electronics products to support their action plan, and this Sony-produced short film telling their story:
Stemming from Founder and CEO Janine Spruill's longtime interest in community storytelling, Lil' Filmmakers became a nonprofit organization in 2009. "I needed this place to be home for people," says Spruill. "And not just our kids, community members, anyone who wanted to come in and take advantage of just being in a space where creativity and gathering is the goal."
The organization offers workshops, and after school programs, summer programs, internships and feature film project-based programs that provide young artists hands-on exposure to the filmmaking process. Creative adjustments are made based on an assessment of the academic, artistic and personal needs of each artist in order to retain and enhance their skills.
Lil’ Filmmakers' programs work toward transitioning artists into becoming successful critical thinkers while learning to sustain a career in their chosen field. The professional development aspect of programs help provide practice for skills learned on the job to give creatives real world experience.
