We are excited to announce Room Up Front as a 2024 member of the Create Action community. Room Up Front is a grass-roots Canadian photojournalism mentorship program that aims to offer mentorship opportunities for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) who are passionate about photojournalism and visual storytelling.

The challenge of breaking into informal industry networks like photojournalism is even greater for marginalized communities. The mentorship program aims to make “Room Up Front” by having BIPOC industry professionals and allies help guide those interested in becoming established visual storytellers for their community and the Canadian media industry.
The program is 10 months long and intended to aid early or mid-career photojournalists. Mentees will be matched with mentors by a selection committee and throughout the 10-month program there will be workshops, community meetings, critiques and guest speakers. The program is based on the idea of many supportive hands working together to break down barriers and build connections.
“People with diverse experiences and ways of seeing can only help strengthen our newsrooms and ensure the stories Canadians see are as diverse as the lives they lead.”
