First Photos: See The New 100mm f/2.8 Macro G Master In Action

The new 100mm f/2.8 Macro G Master lens (Buy Now) is completely optimized for macro shooting – delivering breathtaking resolution and bokeh at a new level for macro photographers. Macro wildlife photographer and Sony Artisan Colby Brown had the chance to use the new lens prior to its launch, and we can’t stop staring at the macro magic he was able to create. Keep reading as Brown shares his first shots and thoughts on the premier G Master macro prime lens.

While most of Brown’s macro wildlife work takes him to exotic locations around the globe, this time around he was focused on his home region of Eastern Pennsylvania. “This allowed me to focus on a number of different colorful flora, as well as the few remaining bees and insects that were still around as we began the fall season here on the East Coast. There are a number of shots I took with the 100mm f/2.8 Macro G Master that just blew me away when it came to sharpness and bokeh.”

He paired the lens with his Alpha 1 II to take full advantage of the new G Master, which he calls the perfect range for what he does. “The 100mm focal length is just about the perfect range for most macro wildlife situations,” he explains. “The 1:4:1 macro ratio allows you to fill more of your frame with more details of your subject. Overall, the combination is fantastic.”

Brown continues to rave about the detail he was able to capture, especially when pairing the lens with his teleconverters for even more reach. “There is a lot to love with this lens,” he says. “The new linear AF motors, the GM quality optics/sharpness and the fact that I can use my 1.4x and 2x teleconverters to further increase my macro magnification is a huge benefit for macro wildlife photographers.”

A longtime user of the 90mm f/2.8 Macro G lens, Brown says the 100mm f/2.8 Macro G Master is the new must-have for macro shooters. “I absolutely love the improved AF speeds on this new macro lens,” he says. “Having the latest linear AF motors paired with GM quality optics makes this the ideal lens for anyone interested in macro photography in my book.”

“Overall, I am delighted with the new 100mm f/2.8 Macro G Master lens. It took everything I loved about the 90mm f/2.8 Macro G that was released back in 2015, and made it better in nearly every way. I will absolutely be adding it to my kit.”
