We are excited to announce Global Girl Media as the newest recipient of a Sony Create Action Grant. The Los Angeles-based nonprofit develops the voice and media literacy of teenage girls and young women in underserved communities by teaching them to create and share digital journalism designed to improve scholastic achievement, ignite community activism and spark social change. As winners of the grant, the organization will receive $50,000 in cash to continue and expand their work, a custom short film telling their story, $50,000 in Sony Electronics products to support their action plan, and collaboration and partnership with Sony.
The Los Angeles-based nonprofit develops the voice and media literacy of teenage girls and young women in underserved communities.
Global Girl Media Los Angeles aims to end racial, gender and economic inequity by diversifying the media industry. To achieve this goal, the nonprofit works with females ages 15-20 in underserved communities with a focus on developing media literacy, storytelling and digital journalism and filmmaking skills.
The organization believes training young women of color in digital media journalism is important to developing strong, healthy communities. By putting girls behind the camera and at the center of the story, they’re changing the storytellers so they can change the world. Their work empowers young women to bring new perspectives to the media stage, and ultimately turns up the volume of girls’ voices globally – all while building self-esteem, leadership and 21st century skills.
Sony looks forward to working with Global Girl Media to support their mission of diversifying the media industry.
