Go behind the shot with Miguel Quiles as he takes on a portrait session in harsh, midday sunlight with the Sony Alpha 1 and Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master lens:
A Top Lens For Portraits
Quiles, with many years of portrait photography experience, says that the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM is one of his favorite portrait lenses. “You might think that such a long focal length would be challenging to use, but I can tell you from experience that in the right situations you can get stunning close-up headshots all the way to full body shots with ease.”
The Key To Outdoor Portraits
This portrait session took place on a hot day in Miami, so Quiles was specifically looking for spots with open shade. “This truly is the key to taking portraits and getting a nice, balanced exposure in midday sun,” he explains. “Just make sure that you get your subject in shade, and have them in a position where their skin tone is mostly the same exposure. I use the sun as a hair light to separate the subject from the background – and we’re off to the races.”
More Great Lenses For Outdoor Portrait Photography
The Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM isn't the only lens Quiles uses for outdoor portrait sessions. Watch below as dives into three additional sharp primes – the Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM II, Sony 28-70mm f/2 GM and Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM:
