In Inside, Out There, Sony Artisan Chris Burkard explores core photography concepts that help photographers make stronger images. In Episode 3, he looks at one of the most useful composition tools: the rule of thirds.
Rather than placing a subject directly in the center of the frame, Burkard encourages photographers to use the grid as a guide. Positioning a subject along one of the lines – or near an intersection point – can make an image feel more natural and give the viewer a clearer sense of the scene.
That extra space matters. By placing a subject off center, you can show where they are looking, where they are going or what they have left behind. The result is a photograph that feels less like a target and more like a story.
