We are excited to announce Philadelphia Robotics Coalition as the newest recipient of a Sony Create Action Grant. As winners of the grant, the organization will receive $50,000 in cash to continue and expand their work, a custom short film telling their story, $50,000 in Sony Electronics products to support their action plan, and collaboration and partnership with Sony.
Learn more about the organization and how they’re addressing disparities in STEM education by providing after school robotics programming.
The hands-on, minds-on STEM challenges that students face in robotics programs assist them in building critical thinking, problem solving and communications skills. Philadelphia Robotics Coalition’s mission is to build an ecosystem that supports the next generation of STEM and community leaders through skills development, collaboration and mentorship. The organization fosters equity and diversity within STEM education, ensuring that under-resourced urban schools can sustain high-quality robotics programming, and creating a pipeline to STEM careers for youth historically excluded from the STEM sector.
The Coalition supports robotics programs serving Philadelphia public high school students by awarding grants to fund teams and pay their coaches, matching teams with skilled mentors to assist students and organizing workshops and competitions for the teams. Since the organization’s founding in 2016, they’ve brought participation to an all-time high, meaning more students on robotics teams that will benefit them in their classes and prepare them for college and career.
Sony looks forward to working with Philadelphia Robotics Coalition to support their mission in addressing disparities in STEM education.
