Photo Of The Day: Light & Layers For A 3D View Of Cappadocia’s Landscape

Senad Dziho (@sennivisuals) is a freelance travel and adventure photographer and filmmaker who has a passion for the outdoors. “The outdoors are my playground,” he explains. “I love action, going that extra mile to reach my creative goals and conveying a message through captivating visual storytelling.” When the weather didn’t agree on a trip to capture Cappadocia’s famous hot air balloons, Dziho decided to explore the surrounding area, where he captured this image. We connected with him to learn more about the story behind this shot he created with his Sony Alpha 7R II and Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master.

When the weather didn’t agree on a trip to capture Cappadocia’s famous hot air balloons, travel and adventure creative Senad Dziho took a different approach to capturing the landscape.

The Scene

For this photo, Dziho was on a trip in Cappadocia, Turkey. “That month I was just shooting for my portfolio, and things turned out pretty well,” he explains. “I went to Cappadocia just to photograph and film those famous hot air balloons, but the bad weather didn't allow it, so I started to explore a lot more of the surrounding area. I didn’t plan any specific shots for any of my trip, but I knew one thing: I wanted to capture these crazy rock formations. And that moment after four rainy days, the light hit the rocks just perfectly and the sky cleared up.”

The Gear & Getting The Shot

“I captured this photo with my Sony Alpha 7R II and Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master. I chose this setup because with this camera body and its megapixels, I can easily crop a lot of the image and focus where I want the eye of the viewer without losing quality on the image. The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master allows me to crop and focus significantly on what I want. With that compression and color, it’s just the perfect combination for a photo.”

He continues, “My settings for this image were 1/125-sec, f/8 and ISO 160. I shot this photo handheld because I didn't have time for that perfect light to get lost. I just sat on the terrain and put my camera on my backpack to make it a little more stable.”

The Edit

Dziho says the trip didn’t require him a lot of editing because the light was really great without it. “I just added my preset, then jumped into Photoshop for some dodge and burn to add contrast locally.”

“I love this image because it has five different layers that give this capture a 3D effect. The sense of scale with the tree and the person makes the whole image a lot more interesting and unique because you'll be able to see and understand how huge these rock formations really are.”
