Portrait photographer Niah Aldrich (@niahrosephoto) uses themes in her work, often with color or objects. Watch below as she shares how she builds a theme and get inspiration for your next portrait shoot:
Finding The Vibe
How does Aldrich decide on the overall vibe of her portrait's theme? It all depends. “Sometimes it’s a colorful outfit,” Aldrich explains. “I think, ‘OK, who is a person that would embody that look? Do I have a location that might look really good and bring out the color in that outfit, or the vibe of that person – and I kind of go from there.”
Building A Theme
Sometimes when building a theme, Aldrich starts with a single object and goes from there. “A beautiful shot that I love is this pink image. It’s all pink – Barbie, Legally Blonde, kind of feel. It all started with this pink bag.” And from there, she decided her theme would be Chanel vintage, so she found the perfect model and the perfect pink outfits that would perfectly fit the pink bag.

“I built a set with pink curtains and it all tied together. And it just gives you that connection with the model and with the bag, and just kind of tells that story and makes you just want to be there.”
