Michael Sato was raised in photography family as his father operated a professional studio for some 40 years. It’s the family business and photography is in his blood. Raised on a steady diet of Nikon, Hasselblad and Canon, Sato Studios has switched over to Sony. We caught up with him to find out why.
"I shoot both photo and video. Currently I’m shooting still photos with the Sony α7R II and motion with FS-7 and α7S II. Growing up assisting my dad he always used Hasselblad and Nikon. I got more into the motion side around 1998, starting off with a Sony VX1000 then graduating to VX2000, VX2100 then finally making the switch to HD with HVR-V1U. When the evolution of DSLRs as still and motion cameras started I went to the Canon 5D MkII.
"In the spring of 2014, the Sony α7S came out with its 4K capability, much higher dynamic range, and unbelievable low light performance. That’s when I decided to make the switch to Sony from Canon. I bought 2 α7S cameras with Metabones adapters for my existing collection of lenses.
"When the Sony FS-7 came out I immediately put my name on that pre-order as the specs of the camera were amazing. The internal10-bit 4k and slow motion were the main selling point. When the Sony α7R II came out I let go of my Canon 5D Mk III that I was still using for stills. The raw files from the Sony α7R II are simply amazing!
"Now we are full Sony using the α7S II, α7R II, FS-7 with Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS, Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS, Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS and Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lenses. And I’m very excited to get my hands on the new G Master lenses in the near future."
