“This is one of the few zoom lenses that I’ve ever used that I felt rivaled the image quality that I expect to see coming from a prime lens…” – Sony Artisan Miguel Quiles
Lightweight & Customizable
The Sony 28-70mm f/2 G Master is the first GM zoom lens with a constant f/2 aperture and still weighs in at only 918 grams. “You’ll find that it has an aperture ring that can be declicked using the switch toward the base of the lens. There’s also a zoom smoothness switch that allows you to adjust the torque of the zoom from smooth to tight. You’ll also notice that there are two customizable focus hold buttons, and a focus toggle switch. The filter ring on this lens is 86mm which allows you to attach whichever filters you need for your project.”
Exceptional Optics
What about the optics? Quiles says they are exceptional. He goes through what you’ll find inside the lens that makes it create such stunning imagery, including an 11-blade circular aperture to give you that beautiful bokeh that the G Master series is known for. You can also expect fast, quiet and precise autofocus that you can rely on for both stills and video use.
“As a matter of fact,” Quiles explains, “the autofocus on this lens can easily track subjects up to 120 frames per second during burst shooting without having to worry about getting the shots sharp and in focus.” For those wanting to shoot video, Quiles says it’s a great lens for this too.
Living In The Future
Quiles is a professional portrait photographer, and he took the lens for a portrait photography test both in-studio and on-location. “Honestly it felt like I was living in the future,” he says. “Having a 28-70mm lens that opens up to f/2 while being as light and compact as it was, it was a pleasure to use. But what really impressed me was the combination of the bokeh and the image quality when shooting wide open. This is one of the few zoom lenses that I’ve ever used that I felt rivaled the image quality that I expect to see coming from a prime lens, but I’m actually getting it with the versatility of a zoom lens that covers 28mm all the way to 70mm.”
