Miguel Quiles has captured portraits of every kind, including for fitness brands. In this video, he does a fitness brand shoot using the Alpha 7R V (Buy Now) and 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II (Buy Now). “This is one of my favorite lenses for fitness photography,” he says, “as it gives me flexibility to get all sorts of different compositions without having to compromise image quality.” Watch as he also shares what he calls one of the most important tips for taking fitness photos in the studio. Miguel Quiles shares his biggest piece of advice when shooting fitness photography. (Hint: It has to do with lighting.)
For the background of this shoot, Quiles had a black 4x8 foot V-flat behind his subject. “I wanted the background to be dark so that the viewer’s eye would go straight to my subject. These things are easy to set up and it’s something I highly recommend for studio photography of all types.”
As for his biggest piece of advice when taking fitness photos? Quiles says that unlike other genres of portrait photography where you might use large, soft light, fitness photography requires a different approach. “If you want to bring out the shape of a person’s muscles and just make them look their absolute best, hard light is the way to go.”
Going into further detail, Quiles explains, “Instead of using large light modifiers that spread light everywhere, I opted to have a more controlled approach and used a 22-inch beauty dish with a grid as my main light. And then I added a light with a small 7-inch reflector behind him to edge him out and to kind of separate him from the black background.”
