From the heat of the line to the hush of the lens, chef-turned-filmmaker Isaac Tang charts a journey from craft to storytelling – where the sharpest tool in his kit is no longer a knife, but an Alpha camera. After two decades cooking across Canada and abroad, including an honor with BOCUSE D’OR Team Canada, Isaac set out to represent the hidden heroes of the kitchen with the same precision he brought in the past. With the Alpha 7 V and the 50-150mm f/2 G Master and 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II, he reframes the speed, grace and humanity of chefs in fast bursts and slow-motion detail – transforming culinary mastery into visual poetry.
The Sharpest Tool In my Kit
As a young teenager, my first steps inside a professional kitchen marked the beginning of a lifelong journey. I never considered myself an academic; instead, I was drawn to activities that allowed me to work with my hands. Whether I was playing guitar for hours or participating in solo sports, I preferred focusing on self-improvement over competition with others.
The Kitchen’s Appeal
The kitchen captured my attention with its sensory overload: the enticing aromas, the energetic sounds, the dynamic movements, and the controlled chaos reminiscent of a ship striving to stay balanced. Each night brought new challenges, with daily tasks performed urgently and the persistent feeling of being behind. The pressure to meet goals before guests arrived was constant. Staying organized, preparing delicate ingredients, and cooking with precision demanded endurance and speed. Both qualities were essential; neither could be sacrificed.

Pursuing Mastery
Some nights tested our limits, while others faded into memory. This pursuit became a journey of art and self-discovery, a path many follow in their quest for mastery.
Cooking Around the World
For the next twenty years, I cooked across Canada and in countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Middle East. My dream was to present whimsical creations – art that others called food.
Transition To Visual Storytelling
Everything changed the day I picked up the Alpha 6400, sparking my journey into photography and filmmaking. From the Alpha 7 IV to the Alpha 7 V – my voice grew stronger.

Representing Chefs Visually
I noticed that chefs were often visually underrepresented. The only show that came close was Chef’s Table on Netflix, but it focused on the most extravagant and renowned chefs, leaving many stories untold.
While Chef’s Table inspired me, I felt compelled to share the stories of chefs from my local Canadian community.
I was honored to be inducted into Canada’s most prestigious national culinary team.

Competing in France alongside candidates from twenty-five other countries was the highest honor. This competition is one of the oldest and most renowned.
This experience allowed me to continue telling the story of chefs – their dedication, humanity, passion, and relentless drive to bring ideas to life. Watching masters of their craft compete, with intensity and concentration comparable to a racecar driver navigating a winding road, was thrilling. They faced obstacles with grace and experience, surpassing setbacks.

Hidden Heroes Of The Kitchen
Observing how these professionals move and interact with their environment is remarkable. They are the hidden heroes who strengthen our communities, working out of the spotlight to create food from a love for the craft.

Capturing Culinary Artistry
With my Alpha 7 V camera paired with the 50-150mm f/2 G Master and 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II lenses, I feel as equipped as when wielding a sharp knife for delicate cuts. The camera’s ability to reframe and zoom instantly in a fast-paced setting lets me capture the raw speed and grace of chefs.
Switching between fast burst photography and slow-motion 4K120p video, I document intimate, dramatic moments. The Alpha 7 V has become the successor to my knife – the sharpest tool at my disposal.
My name is Isaac Tang. I am a chef and filmmaker.
