Fashion Week in New York is coming up on February 9th this year. I'm a minimalist as it is, but during Fashion Week especially, I try to carry as close to nothing as I can! The less gear I have with me, the more nimble I can be in getting my shots. Fashion Week poses a number of challenges from the lighting indoors and out to the crowds. It’s a combination of street photography, fashion with the occasional tight detail shot. Photo opportunities literally pop up and vanish in an instant and you have to be ready when that happens.
Body:
Sony α7R II: I love the α7R II for shooting at Fashion Week because it's lightweight and not as bulky or intrusive as DSLRs. It allows me to be nimble and it has the dynamic range to handle the variety of shooting conditions indoors and on the street.
Lenses:
For lenses, I want options that will give me both an intimate feel and enough wideness to capture the entire madness in a frame.
FE 55mm f/1.8: My favorite is the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 as it produces beautiful results in low light and allows me to get close to my subjects which is essential at Fashion Week.
FE 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master: I also love the 24-70mm f/2.8 for its versatility - I can go from grabbing the entire backstage area to something as tight as a beauty shot and still expect the same amount of detail.
Other Essentials:
For my camera bag, I have the Ona Bowery, which I've had for years and is holding up beautifully.
I don't carry many accessories other than extra batteries and memory cards (you can never have enough!). My hardcover Mediacase memory card holder is perfectly compact and holds up to eight additional cards.
Lastly, I make sure to pack a few business cards (I love my square ones from Moo.com) because you never know who you'll end up bumping elbows with in this crowd!
