What’s In My Bag: 1 Camera & 3 Lenses For Epic Landscapes In Lesser-Known Places

Shane Garner (@william.s_photography) is an enthusiast photographer with a love for fine art landscapes and travel imagery. “On my downtime and days off I like to focus most my time on landscape and travel photography. l love to capture the incredible scenery I encounter on my travels across the U.S., using my very minimal gear which consists of one camera, three lenses, a sturdy tripod and a few different filters. I try to capture beautiful images of some amazing places that I have had the privilege to enjoy. There are so many places in the U.S. that many don’t get to see or even notice, and with my small arsenal of gear I am able to share these places with friends, family and my small following on social media.” We came across his Instagram and were blown away by his shots and vibrant colors. Keep reading as Garner shares his go-to photography gear.

Camera

Sony Alpha 7R IV: I gave up my full frame Nikon in 2019. I now use the Sony Alpha 7R IV for its incredible dynamic range, the high resolution of 61 megapixels, the crystal clear viewfinder, the efficient autofocus and its size factor. The ergonomics of the camera makes for a nice feel in my hand when doing off tripod shooting. All buttons can be set to my workflow making for more efficient shooting. All of these key features is why I chose to switch and stay with Sony and will never go back. I am actually looking at getting the NEW Alpha 7R V so I can take advantage of Sonys new technology they put into it.

Lenses

Sony 24-105mm f/4 G: My main passion is landscape, followed by wildlife and lifestyle. I prefer zoom lenses because of their versatility and in harsh situations, it can be damaging to change lenses all the time. So if I can get multiple compositions with just one lens then that’s perfect for me. The Sony 24-105mm f/4 G is my “go-to” lens, most of my work is shot using this lens. It is really sharp and excellent through the entire range of the lens. I have shot absolutely everything with this lens. Everything from landscape, wildlife, lifestyle and even astro photography.

Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master: This telephoto lens is the best that I have ever had. Even though I shoot mostly with the 24-105mm, the Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master is my absolute favorite. For it being a telephoto lens I find it to be pretty light weight and compact in size. The quality of the images come out tack sharp evenly the way out at 400mm. The images I am able to capture with this lens are incredible. It allows me to get more intimate shots that focus on details. It allows me to capture wildlife in an artistic way and I am even able to do some macro work with it.

Sony 35mm f/1.8: This prime lens is a great little compact lens and is my go-to for my lifestyle shooting. The lens is super sharp and he bokeh is nice and smooth when I want to isolate subjects. I also use this lens when I shoot astro because of its fast f/1.8 aperture. My three lens kit got me covered from 24-400mm which has worked perfect for me since I am constantly on the go traveling throughout the country either by plane or my work truck.

Accessories

MeFoto A2350 “GlobeTrotter” + Benro IB2 Arca Swiss type Ballhead: This tripod is strong, compact, reliable, and and easy to clean. The Benro Ballhead is robust and easy to use. The gear driven adjustments for the ball are smooth and have different levels of tension allowing for the perfect degree of movement. The Panoramic feature is also nice to have and has come in use multiple times.

Nisi Filters: The Nisi V5 Pro 100mm system comes in handy when shooting in harsh lighting conditions or when I want to shoot really long exposure using my ND64 or ND1000. If I’m not using the Nisi Filter System I am using my PolarPro Peter McKinnon Edition 2-5 stop polarizing filter. This filter comes in clutch when I want to go really lightweight and minimal. This comes in handy when I shoot waterfalls.

ThinkTank “Airport Roller Derby”: This bag is awesome, spacious and protective for gear, has room for clothes yet compact enough to be a carry on when I have to fly.

Other Accessories: Sony RMT-DSLR2 remote trigger, Stabil L-plate, BlackRapid shoulder strap, Tiffen circular polarizer, Hoya circular polarizer, Hoodman Lens Cleanse cleaning kit, Breakthrough Photography step-up rings.
