That high frame rate really did help in a project like this. But for me the standout feature was pre-capture. Without it, I would’ve missed a fair few of my favorite images. For the right project, it’s a feature that on its own makes this camera worth getting.”

In this Sony Alpha 9 III review and hands-on test, reps from Wex Photo Video explore the picturesque village of Portmeirion. One of the photographers is using the Sony Alpha 9 III to photograph a bird, and the pre-capture feature is an absolute bonus for any photographer capturing action. “Once the autofocus is engaged, the camera is recording the images on a loop. So if I slightly miss the peak action of the part of the action I’m really interested in, perhaps I fire the shutter release just a little too slow, too late, the images are already stored inside the camera. So I can go back in there and retrieve them to make sure I got the perfect shot every single time. And the big bonus is, that pre-capture facility is available at 120 frames per second also.”

They also hop in a helicopter to capture the landscape with the camera, and the new focus areas were a welcome development. “The focus areas, I’ve been asking for improvements in them, so we’ve got more options. And Sony has delivered on this comment, they really have. We now have several additional focus areas. As the focus areas reduce in size, we now have a number of photos areas that sit between some of the existing ones. So we’ve got more of a gradual decrease in size. But the big news is we now have three customizable focus areas, which we can totally customize ourselves and save as a preset.”

Wildlife photographer Duade Paton field tests the Sony Alpha 9 III, and he says the camera is going to change how we photograph birds and other animals. “These features are going to allow us wildlife photographers to capture shots that were so hard to capture before. Freeze the moment that a kingfisher dives into the water, or a bird leaves the perch. The features in this – the global shutter, the 120 frames per second, the precapture, the black-out free shooting – the list goes on and on.”

“In conclusion I truly believe this is a milestone camera for Sony. This camera we’ll look back on as the first global shutter, the first 120 frames per second and all of those things. And cameras from now and the future will build off this and just get better and better. So we have to hand it to Sony for creating this camera.”
