Photographers and filmmakers share the Sony lenses they think deserve more time in the spotlight.
Sony 24-105mm f/4 G – Jake Sloan
YouTube creator Jake Sloan calls the Sony 24-105mm f/4 G the most undervalued and underrated lens that Sony makes. “It is a superb, all-in-one, kind of runaround, run-and-gun lens. This has been like 90% of my videos, a bunch of my client work is this lens, with everything I’ve shot over the last couple of years because it’s just rock solid and gives you such a fantastic focal range to work with.” Watch as he shows off the lens and its capabilities, and what makes it so underrated in his eyes.
Sony 10-18mm f/4 – Matti Haapoja
Filmmaker and vlogger Matti Haapoja calls the Sony 10-18mm f/4 the most underrated Sony lens in his opinion. Fascinated by just how much he can fit in the frame while being so close to the camera, he shows why it’s such a good choice for creators. “The thing most people don’t know about this, is that it’s an APS-C lens, which means it’s a little bit cheaper, BUT it actually fits on a full frame camera.” Watch as he pairs it with his Sony Alpha 7S III:
Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master – Danny Bligh
The Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master isn’t the newest lens…it isn’t even the newest version of this exact lens (see the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II). But even so, YouTube creator Danny Bligh says the original has been his workhorse for so long that it still deserves time and attention. “The thing is a 24-70mm is a very neutral lens. It’s not too wide, and it’s not too telephoto. It’s a good all-rounder for most things and it’s an incredible lens for people to start. Then as you progress as a photographer, as a filmmaker, you get a vibe for whether you want something wider or more telephoto.” Watch as he shares why it’s still the lens of his that never picks up too much dust on the shelf.
Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G – Dusty Cressey
Photographer and videographer Dusty Cressey says in his opinion the most underrated Sony telephoto lens today is the Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G. “That’s because of four specific reasons: the focal length, the size, the price in relation to quality, and then the performance.” Watch in this video as he touches on all of these points, explaining why the lens is kind of a big deal.
Sony 50mm f/1.8 – Brandon Laubhan
Filmmaker Brandon Laubhan calls the Sony 50mm f/1.8 the most underrated lens that everyone needs. Here he explains why this lens is the best bang for your buck. “If you’re first starting out in videography or photography, it is because of the 1.8 aperture. What do I mean by this? You get a nice, silky smooth, blurry background when you shoot at 1.8. Your videos are going to look more cinematic. Your photos are just going to pop if you’re going to be doing portraits or detail shots. And I believe people will start noticing your content because it just has a sense of professionalism.”
