Dog Photography: How To Take Better Photos Of Your Pup

When creator Jeremy Cohen (@jermcohen) noticed many of his friends getting dogs recently, he knew what he had to do. “I’ve been photographing them,” he says, obviously! Good for us – who doesn’t love dog photos? Watch and read below as he explains which feature on his Alpha 1 (Buy Now) helps him always nail focus, and his number one pro tip for taking better photos of your pup.

Using Animal Eye-Autofocus For Better Dog Photos

Cohen uses the Alpha 1 camera, and while he usually has his camera set to Human Eye Autofocus for street photography and portraits, he makes this simple switch when photographing dogs. “I’ll just switch it to Animal Eye Autofocus,” he says, “and photograph these puppies.”

What is Animal Eye AF? It allows you to take beautiful portraits of your pets. By automatically focusing on your pet's eyes rather than the surrounding environment, Real-time Eye AF for Animals makes it easy to take great animal portraits, with just a half-press of the shutter button. Even when your playful pup won't stay still for a minute, you can still capture fleeting expressions, with fast and precise focus. The feature is also perfectly partnered with the silent shutter feature, so there's no need to break your pup's relaxed mood.

Pro Tip: Get Down To The Dog’s Level

Dogs are much lower to the ground, so if you’re photographing your pup from above – you’re probably missing a lot of their personality. Cohen’s pro tip is to bend down to get to the dog’s height, then you can photograph them at eye level.
