Here on AlphaUniverse.com, we’ve been lucky enough to see inside the camera bags of hundreds of leading photographers. It’s interesting to explore the reasons why photographers choose the Sony Alpha cameras, Sony lenses and accessories that they do – plus it’s helpful to hear about useful features from actual users of the gear. It’s also fun to see the popular features that pop up time and time again, and they’re not always what you would expect.
For example, while more and more photographers are reaching for the Sony Alpha 7R V for its high resolution sensor and cutting-edge technology, there’s an additional feature we’ve noticed they can’t stop talking about: the articulating screen. They’ve made it clear that it makes all the difference in the field, and if you don’t believe us, keep reading as they share their firsthand takes:

Top Underrated Feature Of The Sony Alpha 7R V
Landscape photographer Antonio Valente says that for him the main innovation of the Sony Alpha 7R V is the focus bracketing, allowing for a simple and fast capture of shots needed to achieve a sharp final image. But that’s not all. “There's one more feature that may seem of little interest,” he says, “but especially for landscape photographers like me, it's not: the new multidirectional screen. It is very convenient and useful when taking a photo with a foreground in a very low position.”

The Sony Alpha 7R V is music and portrait photographer Mickey Pierre-Louis' main photo camera, and surprise, surprise...she mentions the power of that screen. "The autofocus is so quick," says the Alpha Collective member. "61MP gives me the ability to crop my images in post without losing quality. The flip screen addition is a personal favorite feature of mine for capturing high or low angles. I love the fully customizable options and settings I can get in camera to my liking.”

Photographer Bret Blakely covers it all – and the build and features of the Sony Alpha 7R V is perfect for his photo kit. “The ISO range and low light performance is huge since I am most often shooting dusk, dawn and astro,” he says. “The addition of focus bracketing is incredibly unique and makes the process out in the field that much easier. The fully articulating screen is not to be downplayed either. It really helps when trying to capture a scene with a unique perspective where a non-fully articulating screen would make it hard to see what your camera is seeing properly.”

Kyle van Bavel loves macro photography and capturing beautiful landscapes. He says the Sony Alpha 7R V is his main camera that comes with him on every walk. “I’m in love with the 61mp, as this allows me to get the best and sharpest macro shots. It also allows me to come even closer to my subject if I want without losing quality. The flip screen is helping me to get really low on the ground and gives me a clear view on how the picture would turn out.”

Travel and landscape photographer Criz Quinn says the Sony Alpha 7R V is indispensable for shooting during her epic trips. “The articulating screen is a game changer for me,” she says. “While in the remote island of Sumba in Indonesia earlier this year, the water level was only about a foot deep. To get the reflection shot I wanted, I had to have my camera just barely above the water. The articulating screen was super helpful for this situation as it was impossible for me to peek into the viewfinder to take the shot I wanted.”

Landscape, travel and lifestyle photographer Vince Lim calls the Sony Alpha 7R V perfect for his needs. “With 61 megapixels, it’s a photographer’s dream, and I can confidently say it's the best Sony camera I’ve ever used,” the Alpha Collective member says. “One feature I feel is under-appreciated is the screen, which can be positioned in virtually any angle. The lightning fast autofocus and video capabilities also make this camera a true all in one.”

Photographer Craig Elson says the 61 megapixels of the Sony Alpha 7R V are a nice bonus, but you just can’t sleep on the benefits of the 4-axis LCD screen. “ For all the touting of great technological features, the articulating screen might be the biggest gamechanger. The ability I now have with this camera to shoot wide angle landscapes handheld in low light and from low angles has given me so much more flexibility in my shooting style.”
