See How These Creators Capture The Night Sky & Astronomical Events

On Monday, April 8, 2024 it’s go-time for the long-awaited total solar eclipse that will be across the United States. We’ve helped you pack with the help of Sony Brand Ambassador Mike Meyers and his What's In My Bag For This “Great American Eclipse". We’ve helped you prep with our Eclipse Checklist and our Complete Guide To Photographing The Eclipse, and if you’re feeling extra creative, with help from Sony Artisan and timelapse pro Andrew Geraci, we’ve even showed you How To Timelapse The Eclipse. You’re ready, we’re ready…now let’s just soak in some astro-inspiration to get us pumped up for yet another phenomenon happening in our skies. Fingers crossed the weather cooperates wherever you are trying to capture it!

The 2024 eclipse has us excited about the incoming swath of sky imagery we’re about to see in our feeds. Get a head start & follow these inspiring astro creators.

Rachel Jones Ross – @rachel_jones_ross

The pull of the night sky is built into Sony Brand Ambassador Rachel Jones Ross’ DNA. Her phenomenal astrophotography experience makes her a great resource, and you should check out her workshops for the chance to learn from her firsthand. She took the shot below on her Sony Alpha 1 and Sony 14mm f/1.8 G Master. She shot it as a vertical pano and writes, “I focus-stacked the foreground in the natural light of the aurora, then tilted the camera up to get more of the sky.” Learn more about how she makes such otherworldly astro imagery with her Pro Tips For Creating The Ultimate Dreamy Nightscapes.

Chandresh "C.K." Kedhambadi – @photon.chaser

Chandresh "C.K." Kedhambadi is a landscape and astrophotography photographer based in Alberta, Canada. Photographing the Northern Lights and the Milky Way Galaxy has always been a core aspect of his photography. A hobby that started three years ago has since transitioned into a business and a citizen science contributor. C.K had a unique opportunity to help the scientific community in decoding S.T.E.V.E, a mysterious phenomenon in the night sky, via a citizen science program with NASA (and mentioned below by another astro shooter). He took this shot below with his Sony Alpha 7R III and Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master. Learn more about the gear he uses in What’s In My Bag: A One Camera & One Lens Combo For Capturing Vast Landscapes & Astroscapes.

Naomi Jane Atherton – @naomijaneatherton

Naomi Jane Atherton is a travel and landscape photographer originally from coastal Australia, now based in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Her work is based on a desire to share places and experiences that inspire her, and evoke a curiosity of the outdoors. She’s a big fan of using the Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master for her astrophotography. “When the sun sets and the stars are visible, I’m always reaching for this lens to make astro magic.” She’s actually captured S.T.E.V.E., the phenomenon mentioned above, and you can learn more about it in Behind The Shot: Photographing The Bizarre Atmospheric Phenomenon, STEVE.

Stan Moniz – @stanmoniz

Sony Brand Ambassador Stan Moniz is a photographer and filmmaker who never seems to sit still. It seems like he’s either diving underwater with sharks, driving through the desert chasing storms and sunsets, or, like in the image below captured with his Sony Alpha 7CR, creating unique and compelling astrophotography. He has a ton of knowledge when it comes to gear setup and techniques for photographing the night sky and all of its phenomena. Learn more from him in Photo Fundamentals: How To Get Sharp Stars With The 500 Rule For Astrophotography, Photo Fundamentals: Astro Exposure Basics Explained, Camera Setup Tips For Stacked Star Trail Images and Behind The Shot: How This Creator Used Interval Shooting To Create A Stunning Star Trail Effect.

Mikko Ristamäki – @imikegraphics

Mikko Ristamäki is a photographer and wilderness guide based in Finland. He specializes in capturing nightscapes, focusing on the northern lights and Milky Way for years. He likes to bring his imagery of the night sky to the rest of the world, since the detail is nearly invisible in other parts of the globe because of light pollution. He captured the image below with what he calls his loyal aurora combo, the Sony Alpha 7 III and Sony 20mm f/1.8 G. “After hiking hours in the dark, you really want to trust your gear when the long awaited moment is finally in front of you.” Follow him for more aurora shots in your feed.

Jess Santos – @missjessbess

Sony Alpha Ambassador Jess Santos has a knack for making astroscapes that grab the viewers' eye. Her images have bold blues and purples, exactly what you think of when you think of outerspace. She also hosts photo workshops where you can learn more about how she does what she does best. Check out the epic shots she took below in Arches National Park.

Stephanie Vermillion – @bystephanievermillion

Writer, photographer and videographer Stephanie Vermillion works with outlets such as Outside Magazine, Vogue, National Geographic, Travel & Leisure and BBC Traveler to go on experiences and share her stories through travel journalism and photography. After a trip to Iceland to hunt for the northern lights, she fell in love with astrophotography and astro-tourism. She likes to use her Sony Alpha 7 III, which she calls her “jack of all trades” camera, and she captured the images below in one of her favorite National Parks at night – The Grand Canyon. Read more about her in How This Creator Found Her Way As A Travel, Adventure & Astro-Tourism Storyteller.

Sam Binding – @sambinding

When nighttime falls, photographer Sam Binding turns to astrophotography, and for it, he uses what he calls his dream combination: The Sony Alpha 7 III and Sony 20mm f/1.8 G. Below he captures the Milky Way over the cypress trees of San Quirico d’Orcia in Tuscany – absolutely beautiful! Learn more about his process in Behind The Shot: The Artistry And Craft Of A Coastal Milky Way Masterpiece.
