We connected with director, photographer and editor Alejandro Orchilles (@alexorchilles) to get the inside scoop on his Sony Alpha kit for travel content, product imagery and more. See the gear you’ll find in his bag below.
Alejandro Orchilles (@alexorchilles) is a director, photographer and editor from Miami, Florida. He specializes in creating travel content from all over the world, and has currently been to 38 countries, 5 continents and 26 states. “Most of this travel content is either sold as prints through my website as wall art," he says, "used as footage for travel films or gear reviews on YouTube, and/or sold as stock photography/footage on various websites.” In addition to this travel content, he also works with small and large brands within the United States for social media marketing, websites and other types of promotion. For all of the content creation he does, he relies on a kit complete with two Sony Alpha cameras, four key Sony lenses and a range of accessories. See more on what’s in his bag below.
Director, photographer and editor Alejandro Orchilles gives us a look inside his Sony Alpha kit for travel content creation, product photography and more.
Cameras
Sony Alpha 7R III: This is pretty much my main camera when creating content abroad and on production sets because of the pixel count, low-light sensitivity, and the ability of being able to switch from amazing photos to great video settings/quality. I can go from shooting stills in 42MP to then shooting in 4K in 30fps or 1080P 120fps - it really covers all bases when doing a run and gun setup which is mainly what I’m doing when on the road.

Sony Alpha 7S III: If I’m going to be creating a travel film and find the need to capture in 4K 60fps or 120fps, I’d mainly be using this one handheld or on the Zhiyun Weebill Lab Gimbal. This thing is a beast when it comes to lowlight, as well. A large amount of the content I capture is at night and I can’t be lugging around lights when traveling, so it’s the perfect carry for this situation, as well.
Lenses
Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master: This is my main lens when traveling because it covers most bases from a wide 24mm to a tighter 70mm with a constant aperture of f/2.8 for a shallow depth of field. When creating travel content it rarely comes off my camera. Whether I’m shooting landscape, portraits, or anything in between this is the one I’m using about 70% of the time.

Sony 16-35mm f/4: For everything else, there’s wide angle. For establishing shots, I tend to use this lens the most because it has the widest point of view at 16mm. This is normally what I’m using for vast landscapes, hotels to make the rooms look larger, and real estate. I even use this for portraits if I’m trying to show the subject as well as the location in a wider view so the viewer can really get a feel for the setting that we were in.

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master with 2x Tele-Converter: This is the lens that I use the most when creating punched-in landscape/astro or wildlife content. When I plan to use this one I’ll typically bring a tripod or monopod to reduce any camera movement with this long lens.

Sony 85mm f/1.8: This is my go-to for portraits and finer detailed shots. I love the depth of field with this one with its f/1.8 aperture. The 85mm f/1.8 is also extremely lightweight so I can just toss it in the bag and forget I even have it there.
Accessories
Zhiyun Weebill Lab Gimbal: I love to use this one when creating video with moving shots, be it establishing shots of locations, follow/tracking shots of people, or walk-throughs.
Variable ND Filters: These are great to get proper exposure and shutter speed when rolling video to not have to lose the depth of field style that I love so much. Also for landscape and long exposures these are a must have.
External Battery Pack with USB-C, USB-Micro, and iPhone Cable: When traveling you always have to make sure your gear is properly charged so I NEVER go anywhere without these!
Sony SRS-X11 Bluetooth Speaker Cube and Jabra Elite 75t Earbuds: I like to listen to music while I create so I bring a Bluetooth Speaker and headphones. These headphones are amazing to travel with because they have a long battery life and provide hear-through so you can listen to music while creating content & still be able to hear things around you.
SSD Hard Drives: I highly recommend getting SSD hard drives to work on your laptop with. I normally will travel with two hard drives to have all of the content stored on both - one hard drive to work on and one with backups in another bag.
