For the first time ever, a mirrorless camera rig has been used for live professional soccer in North America – and it features the popular Sony α7R IV and Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master. The combination, along with the Ronin-S handheld gimbal, was referred to in the past as the “Megalodon” when it was first seen on the sidelines back in December 2020 on FOX for American football. Now, according to Sportsvideo.org, FOX Deportes has named the combination the “MegaFoxCam” and is using it for Live Liga MX matches this season.
The rig delivers to viewers that cinematic look with a shallow depth of field. They’re using it to capture everything from throw-ins, goal celebrations, corner kicks and more. While an on-site truck produces the host feed for Liga MX matches, Sportsvideo.org reports that FOX Deportes is using the angle from the Sony setup exclusively for their production and they plan to use the rig throughout the entire season.
