This image takes us to La Paz, Bolivia, where AP photographer Juan Karita is photographing the area's largest Andean cultural and religious festival. He created this image using the Sony Alpha 1 and the compact Sony 35mm f/1.4 G Master – a fitting lens for travel photography because of its small design that's ideal for working in tight spaces. Below Karita explains how he was able to use the combination to capture the merging of traditional culture and modern fashion during the indigenous Catholic festival.
Karita explains, "The indigenous Catholic festival that pays homage to the Lord Jesus of the Great Power is the largest Andean cultural and religious festival in La Paz, Bolivia. It blends culture, religious fervor, and fashion. These shoes are worn by women and young dancers of 'La Morenada' and other dances, and to me, they’re the best example of how culture and tradition merge with modernity and fashion to keep their culture alive in a world marked by commercial competition."
He continues, "The photo works because it shows the shoes perfectly aligned and in contrasting colors as if it were an elegant European fashion gallery, only these are shoes from Andean folk dances in Bolivia, which are also used in their daily life by the Chola, Aymara, and Quechua indigenous women."
