Megan's Work: Conservation Storytelling

Megan is a wildlife photographer and nature travel writer based in Bozeman, Montana. She inspires empathy for endangered species by using storytelling as a bridge to belonging, understanding and action. "My explorations have taken me to the high Himalayas in search of snow leopards, beneath the waves with Galapagos penguins, across the Arctic tracking polar bears, and through the grasslands of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem."

She continues, "Ever since I was a child, I dreamed I could talk to animals. Growing up with autism alienated me in many ways, but I found solace in the natural world. I discovered a true sense of belonging among the weird and wild creatures. The camera became my communication device. I could engage in conversations with animals and capture their voice with compassion. Photography has allowed me to embrace my neurodivergent lens and channel it for conservation."

She now works remotely for Natural Habitat Adventures, the world's first 100% carbon-neutral travel company and official conservation travel partner of World Wildlife Fund (WWF). "We specialize in small-group, nature-focused adventures worldwide," she says. "I am most passionate about my role as Brand Lead for our 'Women's Journeys' program, which empowers women of all ages and backgrounds to experience nature and return home as ambassadors for conservation."

Megan's Go-To Camera & Lens For Birds & Wildlife

Megan calls the Sony Alpha 1 paired with the Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6-3 G lens a potent combination for wildlife photography – blending speed, reach, precision and storytelling versatility into one system. "The Alpha 1’s autofocus performance is exceptional for fast-moving wildlife, especially birds in flight, with advanced subject tracking and bird eye autofocus that can maintain focus even during rapid movement," she says. "Its blackout-free shooting and high burst rate make it possible to capture fleeting wing positions and subtle behavioral moments that would otherwise be missed. The camera’s 50MP sensor also provides incredible detail and cropping flexibility, which is invaluable when photographing distant wildlife."

This image of the Andean Condor is a perfect example of why the setup works so well in the field. Megan explains, "The reach of the 200-600mm allowed me to isolate the condor against the dramatic Patagonian sky while still including enough of the rocky cliffside to ground the animal within its environment. The lens’ built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilization helped keep the image sharp while shooting handheld in rugged terrain, and the focal range gave me the flexibility to quickly adapt composition as the bird moved across the cliff face. Together, the Alpha 1 and 200-600mm allow me to create images that feel both intimate and cinematic – capturing not just the wildlife itself, but the scale, mood and environment that define the story."

Looking For Andean Condors In Patagonia

Megan was traveling with family through western Chubut Province in northern Patagonia, Argentina, in November – springtime in that part of the world. She details the experience:

Knowing Andean condors were native to the region, I hoped to photograph them during our trip. My partner and I drove with our guide from Trevelin, a small town surrounded by lush Andean forest and ancient alerce trees, into the dramatic transitional landscape of the Patagonian steppe, where rugged volcanic mesas and sheer cliffs rise abruptly from the plains.

Suddenly, our guide pulled over to the side of the road and pointed upward. I scanned the towering rock face — nearly 1,000 feet of vertical stone — and saw more than a dozen condors circling overhead. While our guide waited in the car, my partner and I scrambled up to a boulder outcrop across from the cliff. The condors had established nesting sites there, so we were careful to keep our distance and avoid disturbing them.

Dark clouds gathered overhead, and powerful gusts of wind nearly caused me to lose my footing. A storm was rolling in, but it only heightened the drama of the scene. I lay flat against the sharp rocks and pointed my camera toward the sky.

Then something unexpected happened.

One by one — and sometimes in pairs — the condors launched themselves from the cliff and began circling directly above us. At first, it seemed they were assessing whether we posed a threat. But after a while, their behavior felt less cautious and more curious.

The condor in my photograph was a juvenile male who seemed especially interested in our presence. With an almost playful demeanor, he repeatedly returned to his family to check in before gliding back toward us again. Each pass brought him lower and closer overhead before he arced back toward the cliff, where he would preen and nuzzle beside his mother and sibling.

For a brief moment, it felt as though we had been invited into their world. The Kingdom of the Condors.

How She Got The Shot

Framing up the shot wasn't exactly easy given the environment. "I trekked up the mountainside with only the clothes on my back, a pair of Chaco sandals on my feet, and my Alpha 1 and 200-600mm f/5.6-6-3 G cradled in my left arm," Megan says. "Scrambling over sharp volcanic rock and loose soil while protecting my gear was no easy feat, but an encounter like this felt truly once-in-a-lifetime, and it was well worth the risk and effort."

When photographing wildlife, Megan says she tries to place herself in the animal's mindset as much as possible, allowing instinct and curiosity to guide her movements. "That approach often leads to spontaneous adventures like this one," she says. "For that reason, I almost always shoot hand-held; a tripod can limit my mobility, slow my reactions, and sometimes create too much distance between myself and the unfolding moment."

Alpha Female: The Importance Of Community

Megan says winning the Sony Alpha Female+ COTY is a huge honor. "It acknowledges my hard work, affirms my artistry, and illustrates that I can successfully transform my passion into a career. More personally, it feels like a full-circle moment. I know it’s something my younger self – who dreamed of a life rooted in creativity and exploration – would be deeply proud of."

She continues, "Women are a true force of nature, and empowered women are powerful agents of change for people and the planet. Sony Alpha Female+ is a global network that fosters connection through creativity, where women can share ideas, take risks, and grow without judgment. There’s a genuine sense of encouragement and collaboration that makes it feel like more than a community – it’s a sisterhood."

"I’m incredibly grateful to be part of a movement that not only uplifts individual voices but also amplifies collective impact."
