It can be relatively easy to find a stunning background or an interesting foreground. However, Sony Artisan, Don Smith, says it's a harder but worthy task to take the time to capture both in the same photo. The difference, he says, will "provide huge results with your compositions."
"Simply put, if you find a killer foreground, challenge yourself to find a complementary background. Conversely, if you find an awesome background, challenge yourself to find a complementary foreground."
Smith goes on to say that patience is key in making sure you try different angles and spots out to find the right composition for the shot.
"... recently, I could see the sky was setting up for a nice sunset... So, my challenge before the pretty light arrived was to find a complementary foreground. That thankfully was easy to do at this time of year as these awesome rocks are exposed during the winter months."
Resisting jumping the gun and staying focused on getting the complete shot is critical according to Smith. "The worst thing we can do is see the light, then go into a panic mode trying to find a composition."
