Hands On With The New Sony RX10 V – First Photos & Reviews

The new RX10 V is built to handle everything from wildlife and birding to sports, travel, macro and everyday photography and video. A variety of creators had the chance to put it to the test, and they’re calling it one of the most versatile cameras in Sony’s lineup. That’s not all, read more of their thoughts about the RX10 V below. Photos by Brad Deel, Dani Hamm, Quay Hu, Nate Luebbe and Suzi Pratt.

Creators Test The New RX10 V

“As an Alpha 7R V user, I was genuinely surprised by how well the 20.1-megapixel sensor performed compared to the 61-megapixel sensor I'm used to. While I expected to notice the drop in resolution, the image quality exceeded my expectations. What impressed me most, however, was the dynamic range. It handled highlights and shadows exceptionally well, producing files with far more flexibility than I anticipated.” – Dani Hamm

“A camera like this is perfect for an all-in-one travel camera for landscapes and wildlife, so that's what I did! I utilized just about all of its features. For wildlife (I photographed owls and birds, mostly) the blackout free burst shooting was incredibly helpful for keeping my target in frame, and the real-time recognition AF was super helpful for tracking my subjects!” – Nate Luebbe

“I used the RX10 V to photograph everyday life, which for me is my two young children, mostly capturing them while playing to test out the camera features, and also zeroing in on local wildlife we spotted in the neighborhood. The camera is as reliable and high in image quality as I've come to expect from Sony cameras. This camera's telephoto image blew me away. I was pleasantly surprised by it.” – Suzi Pratt

“I’ve had the camera for about a week now and spent some time putting it through a real-world test while photographing my daughter. My initial impression is that the image quality is extremely strong – especially considering the versatility this camera offers.” – Brad Deel

“I thought the image quality was extremely impressive. It's unbelievably cool to have a 24mm-600mm lens built right in, with super bright aperture throughout the range. This handles like an easy point and shoot but with performance like a professional camera many tiers above it.” – Nate Luebbe

“I tested out the Blackout-free 30fps on my fast-moving toddler and it captured some funny (but totally usable) moments. I used AI-based Real-time Recognition AF and absolutely love that more AI subjects were added. Since my boys love vehicles and planes and trains, it was fun to zero in on them. I also love the auto AI recognition feature and found it to be pretty spot on. Funny, the AI recognition in car mode also recognized and focused on my kids' toy cars, which made me chuckle.” – Suzi Pratt

“One evening, I was sitting by a pond when dozens of tiny Tree Swallows were darting all around me. I immediately thought, This is the perfect opportunity to test the blackout-free 30 fps shooting mode. These little birds are unbelievably fast, making them one of the most challenging subjects to photograph. I enabled the AI-based bird subject recognition and real-time focus tracking, then started shooting. This camera absolutely delivered. For the first time ever, I managed to capture sharp, in-focus images of these incredibly quick birds!” – Dani Hamm

(Swallows in flight) Three tree swallows dart through the air along a wetland shoreline, wings spread in mid-flight, frozen in sharp detail against the soft blue water by the Sony RX10 V's fast autofocus.

“During my test, I stayed in one position and photographed my daughter across multiple focal lengths—24mm, 135mm, 200mm, 400mm, and 600mm. The consistency in image quality throughout that entire range was genuinely impressive.” – Brad Deel

"I used the camera for wildlife and street photography. The image quality was good and I utilized the blackout free 30 fps and AI AF. It had great AF for wildlife." – Quay Hu

“For me the most standout aspect was how good the image stabilization is even when handheld at 600mm. I never found myself needing a tripod except for long exposures. Even handheld video fully zoomed in is perfectly usable! I’m also very excited to finally have S-Log3 and S-Cinetone in a camera like this, and 4k/120fps is amazing for action sports and wildlife stuff.” – Nate Luebbe

(Bison dusting) An American bison shakes dust and insects from its massive shaggy head as it rolls in the dry golden grass of the Great Plains — a dynamic moment of wild behavior frozen by the Sony RX10 V.

“The zoom range combined with AI subject tracking was used pretty much 100% of the time as I tried to keep my kids in focus and the animals and vehicles we came across. I was surprised by how great the zoom is on the long end and how smooth the zoom toggle is. Combined with the built in stabilization, I got totally usable shots going from wide to super zoom, all handheld.” – Suzi Pratt

“As someone who primarily photographs wildlife but also enjoys shooting a little bit of everything, I absolutely loved using this camera. Having a 24-600mm range in a single lens was incredible. I typically carry my Alpha 7R IV with a 24-70mm attached and my Alpha 7R V with a 200-600mm attached, so having one camera that could cover that entire range was a true game changer. On top of that, it weighs less than 2.5 pounds, making it an incredibly capable and portable setup for everything from wildlife to landscapes and everyday photography.” – Dani Hamm

(Bison B&W) A massive American bison rests in the grass in this dramatic black-and-white close-up, the texture of its thick coat and curved horn rendered with painterly depth by the Sony RX10 V.

“The best comparison I can make is to a Leatherman. It’s not designed to replace specialized tools like my Sony Alpha 9 III or Sony Alpha 7R V, but that’s not really its purpose. Instead, it delivers a highly capable, all-in-one solution that performs consistently well across a wide range of scenarios.” – Brad Deel

"I have use the previous version of this camera before, I love the new design and ergonomics of the camera. It makes me feel like I'm using an Alpha camera. "I love the 24 to 600 lens. Very versatile. It's going to have a special place in my bag for events like concerts, sporting events and family trips. It's a good overall camera for everyday use." – Quay Hu

(Pigeon close-up) An intimate close-up portrait of a rock pigeon reveals unexpected beauty — iridescent green and violet feathers shimmering at its neck and a striking orange-red eye, captured in exquisite detail with the Sony RX10 V.

(Swan) A mute swan glides through dark, rippling water, its brilliant white plumage and vivid orange bill in sharp contrast against the moody surface — a classic wildlife portrait made with the Sony RX10 V.

“What surprised me most is its professional feel in a more consumer-oriented package. This is the perfect camera for someone who wants an all-in-one solution for walking around on vacation or events, but they no longer have to sacrifice professional features and usability. You have all the capability of an Alpha 7R VI in a lighter, easier to use camera. I frequently go on trips with strict weight limits and this is an awesome camera to help keep my long-telephoto reach, but without the weight of a full size lens.” – Nate Luebbe

(Sunset reflection) A blazing orange and red sunset ignites the sky over a still lake, storm clouds and silhouetted birds reflected perfectly in the glassy water below — a jaw-dropping landscape captured with the Sony RX10 V.

“For the right person – like a parent who's concerned about image quality and willing to carry a larger camera, or a traveling wildlife photographer – this is a win. It's the first time I've seriously considered purchasing a non-ILC super zoom camera.” – Suzi Pratt

(Rabbit) An Eastern cottontail rabbit crouches in a tangle of tall green grass, its alert eye and soft brown fur captured in rich detail with the Sony RX10 V.

“I couldn’t believe how well the macro capabilities performed with its close focusing ability. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the tiny details around me, and I didn’t need any additional equipment to start experimenting with macro photography. I think I might be officially obsessed with macro photography now!” – Dani Hamm

(Spider on flower) A golden spider hunkers in the center of a bright yellow cinquefoil wildflower, its legs spread wide across the petals — a striking macro moment captured with the Sony RX10 V.
