See The Sony Alpha 9 III At Work With A Flash In A Challenging Outdoor Shoot

The Sony Alpha 9 III’s ability to sync flash at all shooting speeds has opened up a new world of possibilities for professional photographers to capture action in a variety of conditions. In this video, Quiles tests out the new Sony Alpha 9 III with the Sony HVL-F60RM2 for an outdoor portrait shoot. “We’re going to see if we can actually overpower the sun and do some high speed flash photography.” Keep watching to see how the combination performs and find more videos like this one on the Alpha Universe YouTube Channel.

The Scene

Quiles is capturing his son swinging at a baseball on a tee during a very bright day. “What we’re going to try to do is, we’re going to lower the ambient light, so that we can basically not have this super bright exposure like you’re seeing in this video,” he explains. “And then we’re going to use the flash at high speed to fill in and light him up as he’s swinging. So we’re going to do this as a continuous shot.”

The Setup

For this shoot, he has the Sony Alpha 9 III paired with the Sony 35mm f/1.4 G Master lens and the Sony HVL-F60RM2 flash. He also has it connected to the external battery pack. “And that’s partially because I’m going to shoot at a really high frame rate, and I want to make sure that this flash has enough power to keep up with this fast action that we’re going to try to capture.”

The Settings

He continues, “I’m shooting all of these shots either near wide open or at that wide open f/1.4 aperture. At f/1.8 I’m able to shoot at that ISO 250. I can bring my shutter speed up to 1/16000-sec, which is great to bring down this very bright light, bring down that ambient light. And then this flash is set up to TTL so it’s going to know how much flash output we need to take these photos.”
