The Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G was introduced in the spring of 2017 alongside the 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master. As the latest in the expanding line of G Master lenses, the 16-35 garnered the majority of the attention at that time. Now, with the 12-24mm f/4 G finding its way into the hands of reviewers, this new G-series lens is proving itself to be an excellent performer in the full-frame, ultra-wide zoom class.
In their rolling review of the 12-24mm f/4 G, Imaging-Resource.com recently published their Field Test results. Taking the lens on an expedition in the rugged country around California's Mt. Whitney, reviewer Brent Durand put the lens to the test “in the sun, dust, snow, rain and cold of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.”
Ultra-wide angle lenses are notoriously difficult to design and build. Yet, the 12-24mm f/4 G impressed Durand with it’s performance across its focal range and even at wide apertures, “The Sony FE 12-24mm lens delivers sharp, crisp images throughout the zoom range. My wide-open shooting was limited to high ISOs, but even those f/4 images are extremely sharp considering the noise.”
Durand suns up his impressions with some high praise...
“The Sony FE 12-24mm is a fantastic lens!"
And...
“Image quality when shooting outdoors on the α9 was superb and I wouldn't hesitate to add the 12-24mm ultra-wide zoom lens to my bag!”
