Under A Blanket Of Stars: Get Inspired By These Astrophotographers

Astrophotography is an art form unto itself. There are many ways to create outstanding astro-images including long exposures and composites. However you prefer to create these images - the Sony gear is the perfect choice. Check out these creatives below and see how they are making unique and breathtaking astro-images using a variety of Sony cameras and lenses. Tag your own Sony shots on Instagram with #SonyAlpha for the chance to be featured on AlphaUniverse.com, and give @sonyalpha a follow for your daily dose of creative inspiration.

We're featuring a group of photographers who are shooting for the stars with their Sony Alpha cameras to create stellar astrophotography.

Katrin Eismann - @katrin_eismann

Katrin Eismann is a Sony Artisan of Imagery whose Instagram feed is filled with street photography, landscapes and the newest creative techniques she’s trying out. In the post below, she’s attempting astrophotography for the first time with help from Alpha Collective member Nate Luebbe. We think her first attempt was awesome! Great inspiration to push yourself and try something new.

Anthony Castro - @anthonys.adventure

Alpha Collective member Anthony Castro is an outdoor travel photographer. His Instagram is always a great place to feed your wanderlust. We love the image below, shot on the Sony Alpha 1 with the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master lens. The yellow jacket contrasts the colors from the sky in a visually pleasing way.

Stan Moniz - @stanmoniz

Stan Moniz is an Alpha Collective member and outdoor photographer. He is known for his beautiful night sky images and you can see his talent for it in the image below. This photograph was shot on the Sony Alpha 7 IV with the Sony 35mm f/1.4 G Master. We love how the rock frames part of the sky and the light cast on the rock keeps our eye moving throughout the frame. See Moniz’s tips for astrophotography HERE.

Andrew Eggers - @andreweggers

Alpha Collective member Andrew Eggers is a huge fan of nighttime photography. He states, “Night photography always brings me the most joy whether shooting in an urban or nature setting.” His Instagram feed is filled with stunning imagery from night and blue hour. This gorgeous photograph was shot on the Sony Alpha 1 and Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master. The glow from the phone illuminates the figure in the frame nicely without overshadowing the main focus - the sky itself.

Cath Simard - @cathsimard

Cath Simard is a photographer, composite artist, and Alpha Collective member. She is known for her surreal, cold, blue, mountain night aesthetic - as can clearly be seen in this image below. This image is a composite of three photographs - the foreground, sky, and moon. All three were shot with the Sony Alpha 7R III – the foreground and the sky were shot with the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master while the moon was shot with the Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master. In the caption, Simard described where she found inspiration for this image - a poem called "Clair de lune" (French for "Moonlight") written by French poet Paul Verlaine in 1869.

Rachel Jones Ross - @rachel_jones_ross

Alpha Collective member Rachel Jones Ross is an astrophotographer and teacher. Her Instagram feed will leave you stunned with square after square of gorgeous astro-images. We love this image below, which shows the Zodiacal Light. Ross explains that, “this unique light is produced when sunlight is scattered by interplanetary dust. It is most easily seen during twilight hours after sunset in the spring months, or in the twilight hours before sunrise in the autumn months, in the direction of the sun.” She shot this image on the Sony Alpha 1 with the Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master. Be sure to check out her Instagram and read more about her camera choices for astrophotography HERE.

Angie Purcell - @wanderinglensphotos

Angie Purcell is a photographer and an active member of the Sony Alpha Female Community. Purcell takes many eye catching landscape and nature images. We love this astrophotography shot below, taken at Cape May, New Jersey. She made this image with the Sony Alpha 7R III and the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G. Check out more of Purcell’s work on her Instagram.

Melissa - @roamsimply

Melissa is a travel and adventure photographer based out of Southern California. She takes epic and creative landscape images and frequently posts them to Instagram. We love the reflection from the water in the image below. It gives the foreground an almost painterly feel to it. And of course, the colors in the sky are absolutely stunning.

Debbie Dill - @debbie.dill.photo

Debbie Dill is a photographer based in Basel, Switzerland. She uses her Sony Alpha 7 III and Sony Alpha 6600 to take epic landscape images. In the caption of this image, she explains that she’s seen many photos of this mountain, the Matterhorn, under the milky way, but she had never seen that image taken in the winter. So she decided to brave the cold, sleeping in a tent at -8°C to make this image. While she says it wasn’t exactly what she had visualized - we think it is outstanding! And major kudos to Dill for toughing out the cold to make a new image.
