Winter Wanderlust: See How These Photographers Document Winter Sports & Adventures

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean our love of adventure stops! In terms of photography, winter offers some incredible light and great texture. So slide on your snow shoes and make some winter magic! We’ve gathered some top adventure photographers who have made fantastic images while in a winter wonderland. Chris Burkard - @ChrisBurkard

Sony Artisan Chris Burkard is an accomplished explorer, photographer, creative director, speaker, and author. Traveling throughout the year to pursue the farthest expanses of Earth, Burkard works to capture stories that inspire humans to consider their relationship with nature, while promoting the preservation of wild places everywhere. Layered by outdoor, travel, adventure, surf and lifestyle subjects, Burkard is known for images that are punctuated by untamed, powerful landscapes. We love the stunning images below from a recent assignment he did in the Swiss Alps.

Taylor Rees – @taylorfreesolo

Sony Artisan Taylor Rees is an adventure filmmaker and photographer who travels to different parts of the world telling stories she finds important. Her Instagram account provides the perfect snapshot of her work, while teaching her audience about these critical issues. The images below, taken on the Sony Alpha 1 make it feel like we’re sitting right there in Greenland!

Renan Ozturk - @Renan_Ozturk

Adventure filmmaker and Sony Artisan Renan Ozturk tells stories about our connection to the natural world, often set within the most challenging environments on Earth. His Instagram account is filled with intimate stories with stunning imagery. We love the image below, the wide angle lends itself to the epic tone and graphic shape of the tree fills the frame. 

Scott Kranz  – @scott_kranz

Scott Kranz is based in Seattle and a member of the Alpha Collective. He’s become well-known for his outstanding travel images, and long treks through the mountains. Check out his travel photography tips HERE. In the images below, Kranz is in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Both shots were made with the Sony Alpha 1 – the first image had the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master and the second Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master telephoto at 400mm. In the caption, he explains that the second image exists within the first - can you find it?! 

Aljaž Žnidaršič - @aljaz_znidarsic

Aljaž Žnidaršič is a photographer, mountaineer, and adventurer from Slovenia. He has gone on some epic expeditions, camera in hand, to make some pretty insane images. For example, the image below, in stunning light above the clouds, was jaw-dropping. Be sure to give him a follow on Instagram. 

Savannah Cumming - @Sav.Cummins

Savannah is an adventure photographer, cinematographer, and director that has cultivated her skills in venues around the world. She’s an athlete for the North Face and she produces content for Google, The North Face, Ford, Red Bull, Instagram, The New York Times, La Sportiva, Rock and Ice, Alpinist,  Women’s Health and many more. And we love this beautiful photo of Jimmy Chin. 

Edgar Canales - @edgarcdelrio

Edgar Canales is a wildlife, travel and adventure photographer. He has a love of the ocean and the mountains, and often uses those places as the backdrop for his imagery. These photographs were taken at Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl, an inactive stratovolcano, the highest mountain in Mexico and the third highest in North America, after Denali of Alaska in the United States and Mount Logan of Canada. We love the stunning lighting. 

Robin Uthe - @robinxbenjamin

Robin is a Vienna-based commercial photographer specialized in travel, tourism and outdoor photography who is always on the search for the next adventure. His camera with him, he travels to close and remote places of this world with the aim of capturing unique moments, following the beauty of nature to find something beyond the ordinary. Robin’s goal is to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone, seek the unknown adventure and discover the world for themselves. We love the scene and the color tone of the image below. 

Erin Hogue – @erinhogue

Erin Hogue is a Sony photographer, visual artist, creative director and adventurer.  She's often out in the elements documenting extreme winter sports, so you’re sure to find breathtaking visual imagery when you check out her account. She’s also on a mission to bring awareness to climate change through her work. She took this image with the Sony Xperia. In the caption she states, “At first I thought I would feel limited not having my big camera with a fast shutter speed, multiple lenses, and the raw images. In the end I felt the opposite. The @sonyxperia has 3 built-in lenses, high speed shutter and shots raw so all I had to sacrifice was my big pack.”

Jocelyn Chavy - @jocelynchavy

Jocelyn Chavy tells adventure stories through words and photography. He has worked for most of the mountaineering magazines in France, including Vertical, and Montagnes Magazine as editor in chief. Always with his camera he climbed onto some wild edges including twice Yosemite's El Capitan and survived various Nepali Dal Bhats and these adventures have produced some breathtaking images.
