A Different Perspective: See How These Creators Put A Twist On Macro Photography

We have to admit, we're suckers for a strong macro image. Not only is it satisfying to see the details of something, but it’s also an opportunity for interesting perspectives. With the Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G lens, many photographers are making stunning traditional macro images of insects, products, flowers and more. But there is a whole other world of macro out there: wide angle macro. Wide angle macro, also known as wide angle close up, consists of shooting with a close focusing distance. What sets this apart from traditional macro is that these lenses are at a wider angle than 90-105mm. Using a wider angle lens, like the Sony 14mm f/1.8 G Master or Sony 50mm f/1.2 G Master lens allows the photographer to shoot those gorgeous close up details, while still including lots of detail in the background. This is a whole new spin on macro that adds depth and storytelling to images.

We have gathered a group of outstanding macro photographers who have taken a spin on traditional macro shoots in one way or another. Check them out on Instagram and give them a follow. Also, share your macro images with us by tagging your posts with #SonyAlpha and follow @sonyalpha for your daily dose of Sony photo inspiration.

Check out these photographers who are putting a whole new spin on macro that adds depth and storytelling to images.

Caroline Jensen - @carolinej

Sony Artisan of Imagery Caroline Jensen is a botanical photographer living on the prairie of SW Minnesota. With a specialty in flower photography, she has become a real expert in creating macro images using her Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G and her full kit of Sony lenses! Not only is it a passion for Jensen, it has also become a sort of stress relief. We love the image below, made with Jensen’s Sony Alpha 7 IV and Sony 50mm f/1.2 G Master; while the shot is not technically macro, it allows the viewer to take in great detail with a wider scene.

Javier Aznar González de Rueda – @javier_aznar_photography

Photographer Javier Aznar González de Rueda’s work is mainly focused on natural history and wildlife conservation along with its relationship with humans. He is a @natgeo contributing photographer and a fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers and The Photo Society. He has a background in biology and aims to offer a personal point of view showing nature at its wildest state through his photography. He is well-known for his fantastic wide angle macro shots, like the one below os of the endangered horned marsupial frog.

Benjamin Olson – @benjaminolsonphotography

Benjamin Olson is a wildlife, landscape and conservation photographer. His life revolves around the wilderness, and his work aims to bridge the gap between society and nature. He’s a Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers and he’s currently working on multiple visual research projects to document the impacts of climate change. We love this fantastic shot below that Olson made using a camera trap. You get a sense of scale when you look at how large the cup is! The addition of context in the scene that comes through with a wide angle, is what truly makes this image great.

Katie Schuler - @CoralandOak

Filmmaker and photographer Katie Schuler focuses on the world’s most at-risk species. This Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers aims to tell engaging stories that speak to our shared sense of empathy and compassion. She is most well-known for her two National Geographic films covering pangolins. The image below is from the second of those films, “Nigerians Fight to Protect the World's Most Trafficked Mammal” shot on the Sony FX7 and Sony Alpha 7S II. Again, the shot below showcases the power of including more context in an image.

Andre Gruber - @pic.shotz

Andre Gruber is a German photographer. He’s a bit of a jack of all trades, shooting portraits, products, landscapes, and street photography. He frequently shares images of his son, taken with the Sony Alpha 7 IV and Sony 14mm f/1.8 G Master. The Sony 14mm is a fantastic option for wide angle close up images because it has a minimum focusing distance of 9.8" (0.25m). This allows the photographer to get close to a subject, like Gruber did in the shot below.

Lewis Burnett - @HuntingForParadise

Lewis Burnett is a photographer and videographer based out of Australia's South-West. Burnett believes that our society has lost the vital connection with the natural world that allows us to not just survive on this crazy planet, but thrive. He hopes that by capturing the endless beauty that nature has to offer he will inspire people to live a more simple, happy and environmentally conscious life. He took the image below on the Sony Alpha 1 and the Sony 14mm f/1.8 G Master.

Matt Stirn - @MattStirn

Archeologist turned photojournalist Matt Stirn has found a special niche in photographing culture and history. Stirn has shot archaeology stories for National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, and the New York Times. He has had to be creative with his shooting to make artifacts look interesting and tell the story he’s trying to convey. In the image below, Stirn is using wide angle macro to include snippets of the dig itself along with what’s being found. Stirn shot this on his Sony Alpha 7R III and the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master

Melody - @smallcreationsbymel

Melody created this Instagram account to share images she made of her hobby: creating scenes with polymer clay art. Scrolling through her account, you’ll see clay food dishes, fish, earrings and more! In the image below, she put together this scene and took the image with her Sony Alpha 5100 with a Sony E 30mm f/3.5 Macro lens.

Sean Kinchela - @local_famous_photography

Sean Kinchela is a photographer based on the South Coast of Australia. His images are primarily coastal, featuring wildlife, stunning landscapes, or even underwater imagery. We love the image he made below, of a Bigibilla, also known as an Echidna. Kinchela took this shot with his Sony Alpha 7R III and Sony 14mm f/1.8 G Master

Chelsea Mayer - @chelseamayerphotography

Chelsea Mayer is a photographer and filmmaker focused on wildlife conservation. She grew up in Huntington Beach, California, and attended UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, where she earned her degree in film production. For the last several years, Chelsea has worked on whale watching and scuba diving boats in southern California. She is a US Coast Guard-licensed 100 ton Captain, PADI Divemaster, American Cetacean Society Naturalist, and Girls Who Click Ambassador. We adore the shot of the octopus below, it’s not every day we get a close up look at these creatures.
