AP Photo Of The Week: The Emotion Of Football Fandom

While at a football game featuring the Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, AP photographer Frank Augstein wanted to take a photo that conveyed the feeling and intensity of the moment. With the fans in the stands waving their flags, Augstein set his Sony Alpha 1 to a slow shutter speed and took an image to bring the movement to life in a still photograph.

Augstein explains, “The picture was shot with a slow shutter speed on the Sony 400mm f/2.8 G Master lens and the Sony Alpha 1 – at 1/10-sec. and a monopod to stabilize. The Paris Saint Germain supporters were given silver, blue and red flags which they started to wave as their team entered the pitch to warm up."

He continues, "It is quite impressive when a big crowd waves with flags, but it doesn’t really come across with a static or frozen picture, so I used a slower shutter speed to capture movement. I could focus on someone in the center whose head was steady to give the picture a focal point.”
