Paul Nicklen & Cristina Mittermeier – SeaLegacy

Sony Artisans Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier are co-founders of the nonprofit, SeaLegacy which uses imagery and storytelling to protect the ocean. Much of that storytelling is shared through their YouTube Channel. The SeaLegacy channel is a fantastic way to learn about the ocean and conservation efforts while being inspired by the premier filmmaking techniques Nicklen and Mittermeier use. For example, the short film below showcases a powerful way to include many voices in a short clip while keeping a cohesive story.

Chris Burkard

Sony Artisan Chris Burkard ia photographer, filmmaker and artist, based in California’s central coast. His work is layered by surf, outdoor, adventure lifestyle and travel subjects. In his director's reel below, Burkhard states that he is on a “crusade against the mundane,” using his storytelling to push himself outside of his comfort zone. His YouTube channel has trailers and full films from his award-winning body of work. It also has gear reviews and other lessons for aspiring filmmakers.

Brandon Li

Filmmaker Brandon Li creates energetic, award-winning short films. He also creates tutorials and answers questions about his gear and techniques on his YouTube Channel. Not only can you learn about his go to gear and how to maximize those tools for filmmaking. He also breaks down filmmaking techniques and theories into simplistic terms that can be tremendously helpful for aspiring filmmakers. The video below walks you through how to build a scene, rather than specific shots. And then he dives into how to make that scene evoke emotion. Alan Lacy is a wildlife cameraman and documentary filmmaker. How YouTube channel, Filming the Wild, takes a behind the scenes look at what it takes to produce wildlife documentaries and natural history programming. Timmy Lodhi is a filmmaker based out of San Francisco with an emphasis on outdoor travel films, music videos, and documentaries. His YouTube channel is a mixture of short films and tutorials.
