Sony introduces a new “Monitor & Control” mobile app for visual content creators to support their Cinema Line cameras. The new app enables wireless monitoring, high-precision exposure adjustment, and focus control on the larger screen, turning your mobile smartphone or tablet into a wireless monitor with professional camera controls.
Compatibility
The new “Monitor & Control” app is available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. At launch, the app will work with the Sony FX6, Sony FX3, and Sony FX30 Cinema Line cameras which will require the latest firmware version to enable compatibility with the app. The app will also work with the Sony Burano CineAlta camera when it launches next spring. Firmware for Sony cameras can be downloaded from Sony’s support site: www.sony.com/electronics/support/. Sony also plans to expand the “Monitor & Control” app compatibility to cover models outside Cinema Line, with different functions available for each model. Further details at www.sony.net/ccmc.
Monitor
One of the primary features of “Motion & Control” is that creators can use their smartphone or tablet as a wireless second screen for their camera. The large screen of a connected smartphone or tablet provides users with professional features including a bright, detailed waveform monitor, a false color display, and a full-screen histogram.
Precise Exposure Monitoring
The histogram gives you a quick view of the overall brightness and luminance. The waveform helps identify the exposure levels in different parts of your image. Both update in real time, and can be freely hidden, resized, or moved to suit your shooting needs. An optional false color overlay lets you dial in perfect exposure for your subject.
*Supported cameras: Sony FX3 & Sony FX30
Beyond monitoring capabilities, it is also possible remote control connected cameras basic settings, such as start/stop recording, adjusting white balance, ISO and more*. Advanced color settings can also be controlled including adjustment of Picture Profile, Scene file settings, LUT switching, and other operations. LUT can also be applied in Log shooting so that an image resembling the finished image after post-production which can be checked on a larger screen during recording.
*Configurable operations depend on the connected camera. For details, refer to support page.
Intuitive Focus Controls
Whether using “Monitor & Control” on a device attached to the camera or remotely controlling the camera, it can be helpful to control the focus settings directly from a mobile device. Focus settings including touch Focus, Autofocus sensitivity, and more* can be configured wirelessly and intuitively. Users can tap a subject shown on the monitor of tablet or smartphone to track a subject using Real-time Tracking, so that the camera operator can concentrate on moving the camera without worrying about focusing.
An intuitive on-screen control bar on the side of the screen gives you intuitive control of settings, including manual focus. The powerful control bar can be set with focus transition speeds, upper and lower focus limits, and magnified up to 350% for precise focus adjustment. When shooting with the FX6, the iris and Variable ND filter can also be assigned to the control bar, for larger screen fine-tuning of depth of field or exposure.
The new app should enable creators to have a much more flexible workflow, even when they don’t own a separate external monitoring device.
