What's In My Bag: Four G Master Primes Capture Life In The City

Heath Rasmussen (@heath.rasmussen) predominantly shoots urban, cityscape, street as well as commercial photography. “I have the good fortune of living in Barcelona which is ripe in shooting and professional opportunities,” he says. “I very much enjoy capturing mood in my shots and love ‘leveraging’ both early morning and early evening light. My bag of gear allows me to be mobile and ready to quickly take advantage of interesting moments as they arise." Rasmussen switched to Sony Alpha cameras and lenses a few years ago and, he syas, "there's no looking back. I love the camera specs, broad range of amazing lenses and feel fully confident that my gear will help me consistently deliver. Sony inspires me to be creative.” We connected with Rasmussen to learn more about the all prime lens kit he packs in his bag for a day of shooting.

Camera

Sony Alpha 7R IV: I shoot exclusively on the Sony Alpha 7R IV. The image quality this camera delivers is outstanding and the high megapixel count really allows me flexibility in post to crop. The ergonomics are great, as are the camera's dynamic range and low-light performance.

Lenses

Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master: This a compact lens that just delivers. I always shoot with primes and I've become obsessed with Sony's range. I often reach for the 24mm f/1.4 GM when working in tight spaces or when shooting wider cityscape shots. I'm aware of its wonderful astro capability too but haven’t ventured down that path as of yet.

Sony 35mm f/1.4 G Master: This is my all around lens and I would say one of the sharpest primes available. Its footprint is small and light and both color and bokeh rendering is outstanding. If I only packed one lens, this would be my choice as being the most versatile prime.

Sony 50mm f/1.2 G Master: Sony hit it out of the park with this one. The 50mm f/1.2 GM is one sexy lens. And the images it produces are magic. As I enjoy shooting in low-light conditions, the f/1.2 allows me to venture into the night and get great images while keeping my ISO low and within reason. While a fantastic portrait lens, I also use it in a wide range of scenarios (street, lifestyle work, urban, etc.). A dream!

Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master: Another killer lens. Sharp as a tack and with super reliable AF. Another great portrait lens that also side hustles as a street lens when looking for more distance between myself and my subject. And when paired with the Alpha 7R IV, I essentially have a rockstar 200mm f/2.7 while retaining 26 effective MP.
