What’s In My Bag: The RX10 V For Landscape & Wildlife Photography

Alpha Collective member Nate Luebbe is a full time nature photographer specializing in landscapes, wildlife and conservation. He recently had a chance to pack the new Sony RX10 V in his kit. “A camera like this is perfect for an all-in-one travel camera for landscapes and wildlife, so that's what I did!” Keep reading as Nate shares his thoughts and photos from this new single camera kit for landscapes and wildlife photography.

A fully packed camera backpack lays open to reveal a Sony camera, first aid kit, water bottle, and compact accessories — Nate Luebbe's complete Sony RX10 V field kit.

Camera

RX10 V: I utilized just about all of this camera’s features. For wildlife (I photographed owls and birds, mostly) the blackout free burst shooting was incredibly helpful for keeping my target in frame, and the real-time recognition AF was super helpful for tracking my subjects! I thought the image quality was extremely impressive. It's unbelievably cool to have a 24mm-600mm lens built right in, with super bright aperture throughout the range. This handles like an easy point and shoot but with performance like a professional camera many tiers above it.

For me the most standout aspect was how good the image stabilization is even when handheld at 600mm. I never found myself needing a tripod except for long exposures. Even handheld video fully zoomed in is perfectly usable! I’m also very excited to finally have S-Log3 and S-Cinetone in a camera like this, and 4k/120fps is amazing for action sports and wildlife stuff.

What surprised me most is its professional feel in a more consumer-oriented package. This is the perfect camera for someone who wants an all-in-one solution for walking around on vacation or events, but they no longer have to sacrifice professional features and usability. You have all the capability of an Alpha 7R VI in a lighter, easier to use camera. I frequently go on trips with strict weight limits and this is an awesome camera to help keep my long-telephoto reach, but without the weight of a full size lens.
