When photographer David Dinette converted to Sony, the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G was the first lens that he purchased, and he says it’s been a staple in his bag ever since. “This is my preferred telephoto zoom lens for a couple reasons. First, the image stabilization is outstanding when shooting handheld. Second, it is much lighter than other telephoto zooms. The fact that the lens is an f/4 doesn’t bother me since I am photographing landscapes and I rarely go that low due to the loss in depth of field.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Wide-Angle And Tele-Zoom Kit For Landscape Photography.
“Living in Southern California has its advantages, as Death Valley is only four hours away. This area is known for windy conditions in the spring. After tracking the weather for a few days, I saw a big windstorm coming into the park, so I drove up for the day and captured this golden light at sunset.” Photo by David Dinette. Sony Alpha 7R III. Wildlife conservation and nature photographer Kali Wexler says the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G is super light, packable and a workhorse for multiple applications. “I’ve had it forever and it comes with me literally everywhere I go, even when scrambling up mountains or traveling internationally with family. It’s compact and offers a great focal range for a variety of shooting styles (not just wildlife). I actually love this lens mostly for outdoor portraits and lifestyle shots.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: 2 Cameras & 3 Lenses To Make This Wildlife & Nature Photographer A Happy Camper.

Husband and wife creative team Mark and Tracey Crown calls this lens one of their favorites and an absolute workhorse on wedding day. “We love the compression of this lens at 200mm and the way that it makes everything else except the couple fall away to nothing. We use this for both photography and video coverage of the ceremony as well as portraits and to capture speeches in the receptions. One other amazing feature about this lens is that it has independent Image Stabilization, which you can combine with the Alpha 7S III IBIS for incredibly steady footage. It’s not uncommon for Mark to handhold this lens while shooting video at 200mm!” Read more in What’s In Our Bag: A Husband & Wife Wedding Team’s Kit For Photo & Video.

The Sony 70-200mm f/4 G was photographer and filmmaker Daryl Scott Walker’s first ‘big’ zoom lens and one of the first Sony lenses he ever purchased. “It’s sharp, lightweight and with the Optical Steady Shot you're able to shoot at the 200mm length with ease. Being lightweight, it's a lens I’ll use for longer days in the mountains where being light and nimble is key.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Zoom Trinity (+ One) & A Handful Of Fast Primes For Nature & Adventure Photography.

Photographer Jeff Oliver spends a lot of time hiking, and the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G can always be found in his kit to document the journey. “When I need some more reach or the sky isn’t interesting enough to use my wide angle, I usually reach for the telephoto zoom. The 70-200mm is great for creating compression within a scene, bringing mountains that are miles away, closer to the foreground to make a more appealing composition. It also allows me to focus on small details of a landscape, creating multiple images within one scene.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Lightweight Full-Frame Kit For A Thru-Hiking Vlogger & Nature Photographer.

Specializing in landscape, travel and adventure photography, Tom Kingsford needed a solid zoom lens for creating panoramas. "The 70-200mm f/4 G has been a terrific lens for me. As a compromise between weight and speed, I went with the f/4 G lens and haven’t looked back. The incredible dynamic range and low light capabilities of the Alpha 7R III makes up for the loss in aperture. I’ve created some of my all-time favorite images with this lens." Photo by Tom Kingsford. Sony Alpha 7R III. Sony 70-200mm f/4 G. 6-sec., f/4, ISO 400. Wildfires devastated more land than ever in history during the summer of 2020. This fire, fueled by high winds and exceedingly dry conditions, crept up to the northern edge of town. Capturing these scenes was a surreal experience.
Photographer Brent Guiliano chose the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G as his first telephoto lens because of its size and weight. Drew Simms is a creator on the road, and he’s used the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G to capture a lot of his adventures. ”The 70-200mm f/4 G allows me to combine my two favorite things to shoot, my jeep and the massive landscapes of the US. The compression you get from using a telephoto lens while still keeping detail and focus on your subject, makes it my go-to lens for shooting the Jeep. I’ve also carried this lens plenty of times with me into the backcountry and love the unique perspectives you can shoot at 200mm in the mountains.” Read more in What’s In My Jeep: A Backcountry Adventurer's Kit For Vlogging The Jeep Life.
