This week on Alpha Universe we’ve published a variety of content featuring black and white photography, with articles on camera setup, camera and lens selection, creating a black and white panning photo, and using black and white portraits to tell a deeper story, like that of the Class of 2020, or of NYC as the epicenter of the pandemic, or of the healthcare workers on the frontlines. For today’s Instagram Follow Friday, we’re featuring Sony photographers who are practicing the craft of black and white photography. Take a look at their work below and give them a follow. Then make sure you tag your own Sony shots on Instagram with #BeAlpha for the chance to be featured on AlphaUniverse.com, and give @sonyalpha a follow for your daily dose of creative inspiration.

Thibault Roland – @thibaultrolandphoto
Thibault is a fine art photographer specializing in black and white seascapes, landscapes and architectural photography. He’s also a Sony Artisan and an absolute pro who leads workshops and gives presentations on his craft internationally. He took the shot below in Palouse country from Steptoe Butte State Park in Washington with his Sony α7R III and Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master. Learn more about the gear he uses for his black and white long exposures in his What’s In My Bag article.
Ashley Noel – @nyroamer
Ashley is a member of the Alpha Collective, and she came up with her Instagram handle from her love of roaming New York City and capturing it with her Sony Alpha gear. Under normal circumstances before the pandemic, she would be documenting the streets of New York City or wherever she’s traveling. Many of her posts are in black and white, and she took this panning photo below in Tokyo using her Sony α9 and Sony 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Want to learn how she captured it this way? Check out her story behind the shot.
Greg Noire – @gregnoire
Greg is another member of the Alpha Collective. His Instagram account features a ton of epic concert shots that include some of the biggest names in the music industry. Most of his photos posted are in black and white, creating a unique contrast you don’t always see in concert photography. He took the shot below of Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía performing at the 2020 ACL Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
Matt Mendelsohn – @photomat22
Matt is a seasoned photographer with a ton of experience in the news business, and outside of that shoots weddings, portraits and commercial projects. Lately on his Instagram account you’ll find many black and white senior portraits. He decided to offer these portraits to the Class of 2020 at the local high school, and you can read more about why here. Below is an example of one, and he’s been taking all with his Sony α7R III and Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master lens.
Jillian Cutone – @jillianjoan_photography
Jillian is a Sony photographer and also a worker in the healthcare industry. She’s typically doing engagement shoots or the like on the side of her job as an occupational therapist, but when the pandemic changed her role in the healthcare world she decided she needed to document it with her Sony α6400 and Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens. Now on her Instagram you’ll see powerful black and white portraits of herself and her colleagues, and you can learn more about them here.
